Responsible Retailing
Social responsibility and environmental issues are increasingly affecting customers’ buying habits. The majority of products for resale are purchased through the Co-operative Group through their ‘Sound Sourcing Policy’, which is responsible for ensuring that the quality of goods and supplier relationships are consistent with co-operative values. A key feature of co-op branded goods is their clear labelling and information on product content. The Co-op Movement has also led the way in the provision of Fairtrade goods, which ensures a fair deal for third world producers. There are now over 100 products in the Fairtrade range on sale in Midlands Co-op outlets and sales have increased by 30% in the past year. Member Relations teams, supported by members, promote the Fairtrade message at talks, presentations and in-store-tastings throughout the region.
To protect children from harm, Midlands Co-op has continued to support age-restriction sales initiatives covering tobacco, alcohol and the sale of knives within all of its trading outlets.
