Midlands Co-op Social Accountability Policy
Midlands Co-operative Society genuinely strives to put Co-operative values into practice in everything it does and aims to demonstrate it is living up to these ideals. In June 2002,its Directors endorsed the Social Accountability Policy, which is built on the previously implemented Code of Business Conduct. The new policy recognises the Society's key stakeholders: employees, members, customers, suppliers, the wider community and the environment.
The policy states that the Society is committed, through its Vision and Values:
- to practise a responsible approach to the environment and also contribute positively to the local and wider community
- to the adoption of policies, which promote the cost-effective and prudent use of natural resources
- to protect the public's interest in relation to environmental impacts, and to help to contribute to a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come
- to set itself realistic targets to reduce any potentially negative environmental impacts and to continue to incorporate such considerations in its strategic and operational decision-making
- to work with its suppliers and distributors to promote ethical and social responsibility

Fair Trade
Midlands Society has made Fair Trade more mainstream through promoting awareness, introducing new lines and extending the availability of Fair Trade products to all stores. This, together with increasing the range and sale of organic produce, demonstrates the Society policy of offering consumer choice. Click here to read more about responsible retailing.

Environment
The Government and, indeed, the European Community are committed to reducing the potential harmful impact of businesses on the social and physical environment. Restrictions on landfill usage, ever costlier waste packaging regulations, the Climate Change Levy and restrictions on the disposal of refrigeration equipment are all examples of positive action to enforce more responsible activity by businesses.
The Society has responded very positively to these pressures. Click here to read more about our environment.
