A Tamworth travel expert has just returned from a trip to the heart of Kenya where she gave her time to a project aiding the education and sustainability of a remote African community.

Jemma Davies, Customer Services Assistant for Midlands Co-op Travel’s Holidays-Direct business, spent a week in a small village in Masai country but it was certainly no holiday. Jemma, who lives in Amington, Tamworth, was one of a small group invited to take part in an African aid project funded by Virgin Holidays. She spent her time working to complete a vital water tank for the village, decorating classrooms and teaching children in the local schools.

Jemma said: “The water tank will improve the quality of life for families by reducing the daily burden of water collection and the incidence of water-related disease. I had an amazing trip and it was really gratifying to be able to give my time to a project which makes such a difference to the lives of people living in one of the poorer parts of Africa. As part of my job I spend lots of time giving advice to people travelling to different parts of the world but this trip was certainly no holiday and really made me realise just how much I have.”

As well as offering her time and hard work to the project, Jemma also took the local children a selection of items which they are desperately short of, including books, sports equipment and toys.

Ken Smith, General Manager for Midlands Co-op Travel, said: “We are delighted that Jemma had the opportunity to help out on such an important project and offered her all our support. At the Co-op we put a huge emphasis on giving something back to local communities so it is nice to have the chance to also benefit people living further a field.”

Midlands Co-op Travel, which incorporates Ilkeston Co-op Travel, is the region’s largest independent travel business. As it is not owned by a tour operator or airline it is able to offer the best deals available to a wide variety of holiday companies as well as providing other travel related services such as insurance, commission-free currency and car hire.
