The Co-operative’s White Wine of the Month
Oxford Landing Sauvignon Blanc 2007 – Australia

Although New Zealand has been taking the Antipodean honours with Sauvignon Blanc, Australia is now starting to make some dashingly fruity examples of its own. This is one of the best. An alluringly ripe wine with classic pungent aromas of capsicum, cut grass and lemon, the crisp, lively palate, full of zesty fruit flavours has weight and fleshiness resulting from extended maceration on skins with excellent sugar and acid balance.

Food Suggestion

Serve with green Thai curry.

The Co-operative's Red Wine of the Month
Stone Road Shiraz 2006 - France

Winemaker Thierry Boudinaud has crafted this scrupulously-made, clear-fruited, unoaked, southern French wine at an affordable price. This is a Vin de Pays d’Oc, which nods firmly towards the Rhône in style even though the supplying vineyards are located in the Minervois area of the Languedoc. Extended skin contact and lees stirring ensure concentrated aromas of sweet spice, liquorice and violet leading to a peppery, brambly finish buttressed by soft tannins.

Food Suggestion

It is a lovely accompaniment to roast pork, Lancashire hotpot or most dishes containing kidneys.

The Co-operative's Fine Wine of the Month
Mcquillian's Shiraz Cabernet 2006 - USA

Hailing from the old gold-prospecting area near Lodi, this attractive, oak-staved blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon is not as “soupy” nor does it rely on the residual sugar levels of some of its counterparts at this price from California. French winemaker Nathalie Estribeau ensures that this wine - blended especially for The Co- operative - retains a structure and concentration that enables its spicy, blackcurrant notes to marry with dishes such as steak barbecued with shallots & mushrooms and lambs’ liver and onions.

Food Suggestion

Great with with dishes such as steak barbecued with shallots & mushrooms and lambs' liver and onions

The Co-operative's Fizz of the Month
Beringer Sparkling Rosé NV - USA

The Zinfandel grapes for this classily-packaged addition to Beringer’s range are processed in a true "blanc de noirs" style, where the juice is pressed off red skins. Skin contact proceeds for three hours leading to a slow, cool alcoholic fermentation. Secondary fermentation takes place using the Charmat method. On the nose this wine shows intense floral and fruity notes (rosehips and wild strawberries) whilst flavours of sweet, red cherries and strawberries are richly present on the palate. The finish is fresh and clean with a delicate spiciness and hint of white flowers.

Food Suggestion

Its lively, off-dry character and fullness of flavour mean that it will often be enjoyed on its own, but it is also great with fresh strawberries and clotted cream

Co-Op Rioja Puerta Colorada
2005 – Spain

This is a modern-style Rioja made exclusively for the Co-op by winemaker Julián Murúa at Bodegas Muriel located in Elciego in La Rioja. It is 100% Tempranillo, hand- harvested from bush vines with an average age of 30 years. After vinification in stainless steel, the wine spent six months in new American oak barrels. It was then transferred back to tank until ready for bottling, thus ensuring the fruit-driven style. A vivid, violet colour with primary aromas of red fruits and hints of liquorice, it shows forward fruit on the palate, and it is well structured with smooth tannins and a good length.

Food Suggestion

It is ideal with red meat dishes especially steak and game, but also delicious with rich tomato-based pasta dishes.
