The Co-operative’s White Wine
The Frenchhouse Chardonnay
2006 – France

The Frenchhouse concept has been developed to invigorate the French category. A lot of care has been taken over label design and packaging to back up the quality of the liquid, which has been sourced from a scrupulous family operation whose vineyards are located in the Languedoc. The 100% Chardonnay is unoaked and displays a balance of stone fruit and citrussy notes leading to a round but refreshing finish.

Food Suggestion

It is the ideal companion to seafood or white meats.

Co-op Puglia Primitivo Sangiovese
2006 – Italy

Broad and chunky in style, this southern Italian wine boasts firm, ripe, smoky, blackberry fruit and neatly-balanced tannins and acidity. It is a strong example of Puglia's ability to produce warm, fruit-led wines with good weight and satisfying firmness. 50% of the blend was matured for six months in established French and American oak barrels, giving powerful and succulent tannins.

Food Suggestion

This wine is rich and will age admirably, and is a great match for hearty casseroles.

The Co-operative’s Fizz
Le Drappier Champagne
NV – France

Located in Bar-sur-Aube in the south of the Champagne region, the cellars of the family firm of Champagne Drappier, now run by Michel Drappier, were built over 850 years ago. Carte d’Or is a typical Drappier blend which majors on Pinot Noir (90%) together with some Chardonnay (7%) and a little Pinot Meunier (3%). With grapes often ripening better than in more northerly vineyards, this blend is distinctively full-bodied, with some complexity and biscuity richness.

Food Suggestion

Serve it with hors d’oeuvres, oysters and most fish dishes.

Les Jamelles

  • Les Jamelles Syrah 2006 – France
  • Les Jamelles Viognier 2006 - France

Les Jamelles Syrah
Both these wines are made by Catherine Delaunay-Favre of Badet Clément & Compagnie. The Syrah is rich, full bodied and made from grapes grown in three different locations of the Languedoc: the plain of Béziers, the Aude Valley near Carcassonne and very old vines in the Costières-de-Nîmes area very close to the Rhône Valley. A third of the wine is made by the carbonic maceration method to give a lot of fruit whilst the rest of the grapes undergo a long, three weeks’ maceration to provide structure and colour. About 10% is aged in second-fill French oak to give more complexity. The result is a wine with aromas of wild fruits followed by a palate of herbs, cinnamon and a touch of mint.

Food Suggestion

Serve with lamb’s liver and onions or with pork rillettes.

Les Jamelles Viognier
The Viognier wine has been made from grapes planted in poor soil near Carcassonne in the Minervois appellation area. Yields are kept low, at less than 40 hl/ha, in order to enhance the aromatics of the variety. The wine is aged for several months on its lees to give richness and characteristic apricot and nectarine primary fruit flavours. Floral notes are of Provence's blue lavender and acacia blossom. Overall there is a well-judged balance between weight and acidity.

Food Suggestion

Serve this wine with crab, scallops or mild-to-medium curries.

Bellingham Chardonnay
2006 – South Africa

Made by Niel Groenewald, winemaker at Bellingham, this Chardonnay is made from selected coastal vineyards sites. 70% of the wine was fermented in stainless steel and then left on its lees for nine months. The other 30% was placed in new oak (75% French and 25% American) barrels for fermentation and a further nine months barrel ageing. The result is an elegant, understatedly complex wine with unfolding layer of lemon, creamy vanilla, ripe melons and orange peel aromas. The rich textured mouthfeel adds weight with butterscotch and a refreshing citrus tang.

Trio Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc
2007 – Chile

“Trio” is an unusual and contemporary line made by Ignacio Recabarren at Concha y Toro. Selected from Casablanca Valley fruit, the white blend comprises Chardonnay (partly barrel-aged in French oak), Pinot Grigio (vinified in stainless steel) and Pinot Blanc (partly barrel-aged in French oak). Each varietal characteristic is distinguishable: the structure and depth of flavour comes from the Chardonnay with honeyed, white peaches and papaya flavours, the Pinot Grigio adds the tangy citrus component, whilst balance is achieved by the freshness and elegance of the Pinot Blanc.
