Midlands Co-op Supermarket

In 2004 we were forced to close our Thurmaston Superstore, which at 80,000 sq. ft was our largest trading outlet. We were forced to make 200 employees redundant.

Why?

This was because planning consent was granted to Asda to build an 85,000 sq ft store adjacent to the Thurmaston Superstore.

Although the planning application was originally turned down, this decision was subsequently overruled by the then Trade and Industry Secretary, Stephen Byers.

But now the Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, has agreed to re-open an investigation into the our charge of maladministration by the DTI. We are hopeful of winning substantial damages and compensation from the Government following this error.
