Chellaston History Group is celebrating after receiving £1000 of new digital recording and presentation equipment from community retailer, Midlands Co-operative Society.

The History Group, which was formed in 1980, is open to all sectors of the community and currently has over 70 members. Operating from the Church Hall, the group meets on a monthly basis and gives presentations and slide shows on the history of the region. In addition to the regular meetings, members also organise a free history exhibition every other year, design and print leaflets showing places of interest in the village and organise guided walks around the area.

Mick Malpass, President of the group, explained: “The aim of the Group is to continue to collect, preserve and maintain a collection of Chellaston records for future generations. In our archives we have thousands of pictures and slides, some of which are deteriorating and all of which take up a considerable amount of storage space. We want to be able to digitise our existing records, create local displays and exhibitions and ultimately produce a unique educational resource that will broaden the village’s sense of its own identity. Thanks to the equipment provided by Midlands Co-op this goal is now within our reach.”

The Society donated the money from its Making a Difference Community Dividend fund, which guarantees that a percentage of its trading profit is donated to local groups.

Cyrrhian Macrae, Midlands Co-op’s Head of Community & Co-operative Affairs, added: “As a community retailer Midlands Co-op is delighted to help such a well supported local project. The members of the group are very committed to this venture and will, I’m sure, succeed in preserving the history of Chellaston for future generations. I wish them every success with this very worthwhile project.”
